I think RAM makes some nice mounts with a threaded spot for a camcorder mount. They have some attachments which clamp to tubes.

Take a look at their website. http://www.ram-mount.com/

I've had great success with my StickyPod - just attach it to the door and aim the camera out the front window - it stays put through just about anything.

Video is all we do: www.datatoys.com
We have suction and clamp mounts that can hold up to 4lbs. If you want to be creative we have small high resolution waterproof bullet cameras that weigh under 2oz and can be mounted anywhere. We also offer complete digital recording solutions if you so desire.

http://datatoys.com/video.php

We are currently working on a quad suction mount that will be rated to hold up to 10lbs for large camcorders and high stress environments, it should be released in 3-4 weeks.

Cheers,
Roy

Tell your buddy to be careful on the type of camera and mount. We use cameras on the strut for law enforcement work. The vibration from the engine can mess up the harddrive cameras. Mounts with silicon shocks would be best to reduce vibration.

Glyn go to www.supercircuits.com they will have everything you are looking for at
Reasonable prices I have built up about 50 systems and sold them to many of the
Porsche Club for track events I use a 450 Line per inch lipstick camera you will find
In the catalog and if you buy a sony camcorder with a Lanc jack you can also purchase
A wired remote to start or stop recording and keep the camcorder in the baggage compartment. And I would put my mount to the test www.ussportplanes.com as I have
Had 2 of my systems in cars that have rolled over in PCA club racing and have the video
To prove it. Also have video taken in a Pitts S2B.

You have to be very careful with standard video equipment in aircraft due to the COM's. Out of all the bullet cameras made by the three biggest manufactures in South Korea(which encompasses over 90% of the market) I can assure you we are one of the only ones getting a completely shielded system. The fact that almost all other bullet cameras have unshielded pigtails and even unshielded cabling make them very difficult to successfully use in aircraft. Every time you key the mic with those system you will lose video. Even with our all shielded systems you some have limitations.

Buyer beware!

Glyn:
Just be sure to get something with an analog AV-IN. Although I can't recommend a specific camcorder (every time I find one I like it gets discontinued) I've always liked Sony.

If you want to shoot me an e-mail in a couple weeks I will let you be the first to try out our new quad suction mount.

Cheers,
Roy

If you are going to edit using a MAC, i would not recommend Sony. Sony and MAC don't talk well to eachother.

For the mount I would check this website out http://www.stickypod.com/aerial_camera_mount.html

For the camera I would go for one with solid state media and one that has excellent lens stabilization. I've been looking at the Sony Webbie HD for recording purposes since it has 1080P recording abilities for only $200. It has been getting pretty good reviews on Amazon.
