It looks promising for a low end unit. I suspect it will compete with the ATC Anywhere Map. With any new product you are taking a risk but I put myself on the list for a unit. They promise a 30 day money back guarantee. I just hope it’s not a scam. They have started a Facebook page as well http://www.facebook.com/AdventurePilot There are some screen shots there under photos.

It reminds me of my iPhone app Skycharts http://app-store.appspot.com/?url=viewSoftware%3Fid%3D300623342%26mt%3D8

I have serious misgivings about touchscreen based interface. A lot depends on how well it attaches to the aircraft (or pilot's knee). I know that F-35 uses touchscreen displays, but they are a) well embedded into the dash and b) are not exclusively controlled by the touch. But a suction cup and no edge buttons? I'm going to wait for a report by Daidalos.

The new Garmin Aera units that will be replacing the x96 series and the Anywhere Map ATC also have touch screens. It seems that manufactures are going in that direction. I don’t know if it’s consumer demand or they want to save a few pennies in the manufacturing process.

There was a long discussion about touch screens on the AOPA forums regarding the pros and cons of touch screens. One advantage cited is more usable space for the display without the buttons.

Some people love them and others hate them. I haven’t used one in flight yet so I can’t say which I prefer. My auto GPS and all of the others I’ve seen are touch as well. But you don’t experience turbulence in a car.

Well, it's on my list of things to get after a radio, and Dynon Skyview. So it may be a while.
I agree the bang for the buck appears hard to beat and the couple of people I know with them do like them. I'm hoping they'll be coming out with a new model with a brighter screen (the only knock I've heard on it) before it's time to drop the bucks.

FWIW I saw this being demo'd at the 2011 Sebring LSA Expo. Ambient light was low, as the booth was in a tent and it was scattered to broken outside, so any display brightness had a chance to 'shine' under such conditions. After looking at the Dynon (brilliant, clear displays), GRT (solid and clear, tho' not quite as bright as Dynon) and Garmin (muddy but readable) displays, the iFly struck me as the dimmest of the bunch. For we older pilots and for those required to fly with glasses, I find a bright display is an important criterion for any glass display and I was not impressed with the iFly for that reason. Perhaps they've changed the screen since then?

I know a couple very happy owners of the iFly700 so I'm not going to disparage the functionality but..... I just don't see the value proposition. The iFly is $629 (with an external 3-4 hour battery pack) and $69/year for map updates. You can also get an iPad 2 for $629 (need the 3G model to have an internal GPS) and add the software of choice for an EFB/moving map. Foreflight runs $75/year, there are several others ranging from $25 to $99/year.

The iPad also gives you a device that can do other things -- like house all your aircraft and avionics manuals in addition to all the normal iPad stuff.

The iPad screen is much brighter and I use it regularly in my bubble canopy LSA with my 'old eyes' :)

iFly does have a different form factor which may work better for some than a ~10 inch tablet.

Dave has, in his short post, illustrated the substantial ripple effect of Apple's iPad in one of its many directions. (AT&T guy who came to trouble shoot our DVR & phone connection today no longer carries a laptop; it's now 'iPad' with all their proprietary U-verse software running...)

For those who would like to read some in-depth pro/con/both discussion about using the iPad in a cockpit (and yes, there are many such threads/editorials/blogs out there on this topic), I found this discussion to be very useful:

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=72544

When I spent time with one of the iFly principals at Sebring, I could almost smell their angst. Much like the rowboat wherein the oarsmen are rowing as hard as they can in the direction they want to go, the tide is running in a different direction much faster. They are doing all that can be reasonably expected to make their product a success (and good on 'em for that!) while the shifting mega-tidal stream sweeps them along in a direction not of their choosing.

I have flown with the Ifly 700 for 10 months. I find it easy to use, and very reliable. I used it when I flew my Luscombe from Sacremento Ca. to Hagerstown, Md. The touch screen interface is easy to use, and the suction cup is secure and stable. I have no difficulty moving between screens while in flight. I would reccomend this unit to anyone who is looking for a reliable Gps that is portable. It also has a battery that will last 4 hours for those that have planes with no electrical system. It is very easy to plan a flight using the Ifly, I find that I use it for most flight planning now. I am 54 years old, and my eyes are not what they use to be, and I find the screen to be quite bright. I flew from Tx. to Md. in June, i had no trouble seeing the screen in the bright sunlight!! :D
