I recently got a letter from the FAA stating, in typically confusing terms, that sport pilot endorsements are going to appear on certificates. The tone of the letter makes in sound like this is for sport pilot endorsements for PPLs, which makes little sense.

Does anyone know it this means things like 87+ and airspace endorsements are actually going to go on our SP certificates so we don't have to carry log our log books. If so how does the FAA know what those endorsements are, and what, if any action we need to take.

There is no action required on the part of the pilot, this will be automatic. This change will NOT affect our being required to carry our logbooks as it WILL NOT show airspace endorsements, Vh>87 Knots, etc... It will show endorsement changes such as getting your sea plane rating. The thought behind the action was to ensure new ratings were received and acknowledged by the FAA and the new card would reflect the change. There is currently no plans to remove the restriction for Sport Pilots to carry their logbooks on every flight.

The only information the FAA has is category and class ratings. You will still need to carry your logbook, a copy of the endorsement, or a separate card with the airspeed and airspace endorsements. Note that since carrying the actual logbooks is sometime impractical, 61.51 i 3 allows you to carry "other evidence of required authorized endorsements" on all flights. Try and get a business card sized endorsement from your instructor and keep it with your pilots certificate. This makes it easy if/when you get "carded".
