My avionics shop guys were talking about how the high rpm rotax is so loud compared to a lycoming or continental. Is that true?
I dont have enough rotax experience to make an honest assessment.

Anyone?

I don't know that I could defiantly say the Rotax is louder than say a Continental or Lycoming engine. But, they do sound different, very different. Its probably almost impossible to compare which is louder, due to very differences in sound proofing between types of airplanes.

I don't know about inherent "noisiness", but wouldn't this have more to do with muffler design than the engine itself?

My 912ULS is definitely quieter than the Lycoming IO-360 I used to fly. But then again, we're talking 100 HP vs 200 HP, so it's comparing apples to kiwi fruit.

all depends on the installation.

A formula 1 with O-200 has an unbelievable howl.

The Cub crafters cub with 4 pipe exhaust is loud.

Cub with muffler is quiet

Rotax 912 in the Titan Tornado can be heard for miles.

CTSW was quiet. Depends on prop, exhaust, airframe.

The J-3 with no cowl has more valve noise at idle on the ground than the PA-11 with enclosed cowl.

My REMOS G3 with a 3 blade prop is quiet. Sounds more like a turbine than a 4 cylinder engine.
