Anyone else training in a Champ. I have a friend who has one and feel in love. Found an instructor who trains in a champ and I feel this aircraft gives me the best stick and rudder feel. I want to be the most proficient pilot I can be and fee training in an older aircraft with force me to be a better pilot....any thoughts?

I got my training in a Tecnam, but have been flying a Champ (upgraded with an 0-200) recently. The Tecnam is easier to fly, faster by a bit, easier to land and maneuver on the ground by a LOT and is actually cheaper to rent (can't figure that out at all). I'm still trying to figure out why the old Champ is more fun. The one I've flow is actually an L16, the military model, and the visibility is just crazy good, and it has windows that slide open. I bit it's pretty darn cold in the winter, haven't tried that, whereas the Tecnam has a pretty good heater and is a lot tighter.
I'd say to anyone thinking about training in a Champ or Cub, go for it. You will have a blast.

I personally like the Cub better... but that's just me. I like the Cub's rudder better. The Champ is still a good option.

I personally have never flown in a champ but I have talked to the instructors at my FBO about doing some spin training in our Champ and they say I will love it. Everyone I talk to says that flying a Champ will make you a better pilot, it will humble you in a hurry, but will make you a better pilot. I have also heard great things about the Cubs and have gotten with an instructor to do my Sea Plane rating in the very near future. I say, give it a try you just may like it.

I have a chief and just love it! The feel of these old birds are just great. I think it is the most fun flying airplane I have had. Before the chief I had a Avid and that thing is real squirly on the ground compared to the aeronca. It does make you a better pilot flying a taildragger. The reason the aeronca is more expensive to rent is because of the insurance.
