So finally, after 6 months and just shy of 30 hours, I finally soloed yesterday. My instructor had me do 3 trips around the pattern to full-stops. One landing was beautiful, one so-so, and one -- well, let's just say I'm not going to enter it for a ribbon in the County Fair but the plane doesn't seem any worse for wear.
Today I've got that (appears to be common) "ok, now what?" feeling...
Some observations: I knew that the Remos would perform better without a second person, but I was truly taken aback by the vertical speed/pitch angle I was seeing at Vy. I was subconsciously pitching down and then of course getting way too fast. I also found that I was reaching pattern altitude early on my crosswind and having to throttle back much sooner than I'm used to. I suppose this is a common occurrence with LSAs where the weight of one passenger is proportionally so much more of the useful load than in a heavier certified plane.
Now just got to do some cross-countries and tighten up my maneuvers to PTS... :D |

Now what? Easy. Take a couple of days off for review of your books, and then go ace your written (if you haven't done so already). Then, get out and fly some more solo hours -- at first, in the traffic pattern; later, in the practice area. Next, do a dual XC or two. Then, a solo XC or two. Then, some solo time practicing maneuvers and emergency procedures, after which your instructor will give you a phase check. If all goes well, it's then off to the practical exam, after which you'll be a fully qualified Sport Pilot.
Congratulations, Ryan, and keep up the good work! |

Thanks for all the kind regards!
Today I did some solo flight in the practice area for the first time. I suppose I should have been practicing maneuvers but instead just had a great time flying around on my own lookin' at stuff. There is a massive forest fire going on right now in Colorado only about 20 miles from my home airport so on the one hand it was very interesting to see it from the air but made me a little nervous that I might unintentionally stray into the TFR. |
