Sport Pilot flying Diamond DA40?

Why not? Can an SP w/o 3rd class medical learn to fly DA40/G1000 VFR - receiving dual instruction all the time, never logging PIC, never solo - with a goal maybe to get PPL someday... Say, when HR 3708 passes, or FAA abolishes 3rd class, or rather - pigs start flying :) :) Is there something in FARs...

Re: Question for an experienced Sting S3 pilot.

Cub, Champ, and Taylorcraft are just a few. They may have a small spring to hold the pedals forward whan you take your feet off, but they do not provide measurable tension on the cable. Also most control surfaces will streamline with the wind and not flap un less they are over balanced. I think the...

Re: Question for an experienced Sting S3 pilot.

There is a cable tension spec in the maintenance manual (or should be). Checking it with a tensiometer is a normal part of an annual inspection. The procedure is taught in the 3 week LSRM course. Found an AMM on the net: http://www.sting.aero/owners/downloads/AMMs/TL2000%20AMM%2031%20DEC%2005%20FIN...

Re: Question for an experienced Sting S3 pilot.

Hi, Dave - just returned from another flight. The trim seems to be ok, but yaw instability in a flare persisted even if I do not carry any power into the flare. What I found a bit strange though is that with plane on a ground the rudder is "loose" - flapping +/- 5-7deg with no effort with ...

Re: V-TAIL OR CANARD LSA/BURT RUTAN.

....Anyway, if I'm wrong on any of the above, educate me! I've found this post from the thread I recommended above quite enlightning : it contains graphs for Cessna 172. http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?p=810939#p810939 It appears that at the nominal CG zero-tail-lift (and hence, minimu...

Re: The lsa aircraft that have thus far impressed me.

I can see it now. "Would you like to fly this Beech Staggerwing?" "Uh, no thanks, I don't fly biplanes." http://home.comcast.net/~biplane0/staggerwing/StaggerwingRyan.jpg Well, I'm not competent to embed an image. Beautiful image! :) You did everything right. Just make sure that...

Re: The lsa aircraft that have thus far impressed me.

Another little detail to consider - ease of access to the engine for preflight inspection/maintenance. Tecnam Sierra provides total access to the whole thing by two centrally hinged wings in cowling that are hold down by just two latches: http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4008/4410431466_07047300d6_b.jp...

Re: V-TAIL OR CANARD LSA/BURT RUTAN.

... as well as a design that incorporated the V-Tail design, much like the V-Tail Bonanza. Just make it work and beneficial somehow. Imagine a sleek high-wing, such as the P-2008 with a V-Tail or Canard or even both... I'm pretty sure V-tail in canard configuration would be silghtly redundant (as a...

Re: The lsa aircraft that have thus far impressed me.

I'd be surprised if the Sirius comes in at less than 800lbs typically equipped... I was surprised to learn that my rental Sting S3 has 828lbs empty weight equipped with nothing but basic VFR and BRS. Simalrly equipped alll-metal Sierra had 800lbs, and Evektor w/o BRS - 760lbs. I'd guess Sting S3 ha...

Re: The lsa aircraft that have thus far impressed me.

Many happy/safe hrs of flying in your P-2002, you are a very blessed Man to have such a plane! Thanks! - Alas, I'm just a renter. Took my training and the first year of renting in it, though... So it has the sentimental value for me too. You know- First solo, checkride etc... :) Good times. Thought...

On this topic there's a good song by "Dos Gringos" - USAF band of two real-life F-16 pilots :) (Some strong language, adult pilots only... :) ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNdR53fyLck And just for the heck of it just a good drinking song from "Dos Gringos" (same warning): http...

Re: The lsa aircraft that have thus far impressed me.

Well, I've listed the LSA high-wing favorites, now the low-wing: 1. The Bristell as seen in this thread- 2. The Falcon LS from Renegade- 3. The SportCruiser from Czech Sport- (Noticed the PS-28 model, not quite sure of any major differences between it and the SportCruiser?) 4. The TL-Sting S-4- 5. ...

Re: V-TAIL OR CANARD LSA/BURT RUTAN.

Moreover horizontal stabilizer very often always work as a lifting surface, instead of providing a "downward pressure". In a conventional aircraft? If so, when? Not to rehash this quite exciting topic here - I found the thread on the topic that maybe outright fun to read : http://www.avca...

Re: V-TAIL OR CANARD LSA/BURT RUTAN.

Being a lazy lot I'd keep wondering why do I need to build two wings while everybody else gets away with one. For the most part, does not nearly "everybody else" have two wings - typically one on the front and one on the back? I think the logic is that the conventional arrangement is inhe...
