Re: Sectional Charts and Airspace? Hah!
In addition to skyvector I really love vfrmap.com. I've found the ability to zoom in and out and toggle between sectional, IFR, roadmap and sat photo views while still centered on the same place really useful. That's my go to online map reconnaissance tool.

They didn't get to be 60, 70, coming on 80 years old by being that delicate. But your point is still valid that you don't want any aircraft unnecessarily beat up, either.foresterpoole wrote:I don't know if I trust some line guy with a delicate antique.

I guess he didn't like getting sound advice. I know I have been prone in the past to get caught up in grand ideas, but I usually took the advice I was given under consideration (not always though; I do have an ex wife that proves I can sometimes ignore everyone's warnings, even my own).

Re: New LSA - Bristell, Sting S4, SportCruiser or ?
Of course the SportCrusier was built by Bristell but the Bristell LSA is not the same airplane! It is redesigned to eliminate the shortcomings of the SportCruiser. Jim, I think what you meant to say is that the two aircraft were designed by the same engineer (Milan Bristela). The two are manufactur...

Anyone hear from MacAttack?
Having grown up in Southwest Louisiana, I have many friends still in that area and across SE Texas. Many have checked in, some with news of terrible flooding and in my thoughts and prayers for their safety, I started thinking about Mac. Hope he got his Astore out to high ground before Harvey arrived.

Re: Continuing training / different make-model
Your answer is somewhere in between. First, I have to point out that you don't train to a number of hours. You train to proficiency. However many hours that takes is how many hours that takes. I know it's difficult to think of it that way when the Hobbs is hard wired to your credit card, but it real...

Re: Icon Crash--Up a Box Canyon with No Way Out
Holy cow, this airplane has been on a bad streak of luck. The crash site at Lake Berryessa is about 13 miles from my hangar and I fly over that lake a lot. I'm unfamiliar with this area and only have seen the pictures from the crash site. From those, it appeared that the canyon "floor" wa...

Re: HOLY COW!!!
Remember when American Legend came out with their 'bare bones' model (I can't remember the marketing name they gave it)? One door, round gauges, com, xpndr... that's about it. They made it as low priced as they could to try to attract the more modest purchaser (at least according to them). They sold...

"Let's avoid having to talk to ATC" would likely be fairly well understood without getting to wound up in definitions.

Re: Flare and Touchdown
Jim - Absolutely different set of circumstances. I was just referring to the visual effect (illusion, possibly) when watching the heavier aircraft come in. Gravely Point used to be a great place to have lunch. One day I was watching the airliners using the main N-S runway with my binoculars (sadly, ...

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. There's a ton of videos on the 'Tube of people being blown back from the fence or down the beach. Condolences to the family of the deceased lady.

Re: Flare and Touchdown
I used to go out to a park off the departure end of the main runway at National (KDCA). Watching the airliners' wheels, they seemed to track a straight path all the way to what looked like inches before touchdown. It was the nose that rose (well, stopped descending as the mains 'passed' the nose on ...

Re: Got your license... now what?
As I said, for me that was a while ago and I did pretty much all the things you just laid out, Andy. I just felt that some sort of "here's how you do X and Y while you're out enjoying your new privileges" would have helped a lot. Of course, nowadays, there are all manner of discussion foru...
