Sport Pilot Instructor

Post by pilotgary111 »

I have a Commercial Pilot Certificate with a denied medical and hold a current and valid Driver's license. Can I now qualify to be a Sport Pilot Instructor? If so, what do I need to do to start teaching?

Sorry Pilot Gary,

But... you have to jump through many of the same hoops required for Part 61, Subpart H guys have to.

IE, spin training, 2 Written Tests (unless you already have the FOI), checkride, dual within 60 days of the checkride, etc.

I KNOW you did spins in UPT but, I'll bet you didn't keep a logbook. Most military guys don't. When I went through Army Flight School, all the guys made fun of me for keeping a logbook every day. I have used those logged hours many times to meet requirements for a rating. A computer printout of flight time don't have enough specifics for each flight, to show meeting any other requirement than TOTAL hours.

The FAA wants it to be clear that Sport Pilot CFI's are REAL instructors.

Go read Subpart K of Part 61, or better yet ... get a CFI Sport PTS book and get started. There's really not that much to it.

Oh also...get some experience in a 2-seat ultralight. Unless you already have done it! It's like flying a KC-135A on 2 engines that are only making 20% N1 at wide open throttle, and with the flaps fully deployed and stuck!

SLSA

If you have been denied a medical you can not fly SLSA or GA unless you get qualified to get that medical back. That is why it is important to go to SLSA before the Doctor denies you. Once you have been denied you are out of luck on the GA side and the LSA side. See if you can get it back. Once done then just don't renew it again so they can't get a chance to deny it.

roger lee is right!

It didn't register with me that you were denied your most recent physical.

You'll have to get a "special issuance" of a 3rd class and then the "MOST RECENT MEDICAL" requirement for Sport Pilot priviledges is met.

Maybe your denial was based on something simple to get special issuance for. I think you have only 60 days after the physical to apply for special issuance, so hurry.

I don't think this is required for glider flying, correct me if I'm wrong.
