Foreflight vs wingx

Post by langj »

I currently use foreflight but wonder if I made the right choice. I tried both out but could never get wingx to work on my iPad and gave up. What do you guys think.

You are probably asking this question from the perspective of in-cockpit use, and perhaps WRT flight planning performance beforehand. There are numerous very satisfied users of both apps in these areas and that includes iPad users, so you may want to give yourself - and WingX another chance.

But just like picking a plane should come after evaluating the mission(s) it needs to perform, don't forget to zoom out the lens and look at the full picture, as it relates to you, when evaluating them.
-- are you (or your insurance underwriter) impressed with the FAA's acceptance & approval of Foreflight?
-- does it matter to you that commercial operators are uniformly adopting Foreflight rather than other apps? (If this initially strikes you as irrelevant, consider what this trend means to a for-profit business, and ultimately it's entire customer base).
-- will you be adding an ADS-B box in your cockpit for free in-flight wx and, if so, how much flexibility in product choices do you want? Foreflight has a vested interest in only one box (the Stratus) while WingX, lacking such a financial incentive, welcomes compatability with almost all of them.
-- there are some unique or substantially better features offered by each of the three main apps (to include Garmin's Pilot). Viewing some of the Sporty's video seminars and reading Avweb's and Aviation Consumer's evaluations will offer you some objective information on these.

I prefer Foreflight. Wing-X is okay, but I think after talking to some that have had both Foreflight is just one step ahead. If you have Wing-X it works just fine and this post will boil down to personal preference. Kind of like Chevy's and Ford's. You tend to like one, but not both. I like the new Foreflight app on the Ipad because it talks to me through my headset when I enter taxiways and runways. It issues warnings when approaching both and tells me when I'm on them.

I think your choice was just fine.

Just as a few data points...

WingXPro7 has had no issues on my Gen1 iPad, my wife's "2" or my iPhone 4.

I have yet to try it on a trip, but that should change soon with our upcoming trip to Page and Tucson.

I just got a Moshi anti-glare screen protector for the wife's iPad - easy installation and seems to work as advertised. Glare may still be a problem as the Sky Arrow cockpit is basically a fishbowl, but I'll have one sunshade devote just to keeping direct sun off it.

I'll be using the wife's iPad on the trip. It's white, which may help with heat issues, it's faster, and it allows "Track Up", which is not doable on my first gen.

'been using both, plus others, for going on two years. I have an iPad 1, and just starting to think about upgrading (mini?) because it's getting to the point where the iPad 1 is too slow to keep up with all the features. As Eddie said, track up doesn't work on the "one" and there will be more things things that won't work on it soon. I've already run across aviation apps that require IOS6 (not happening on the iPad one).
I love WingX's split screen and terrain. It gives you radar-like AGL and obstacle/terrain warnings. The new vertical terrain profile is very useful. The position reporting and airspace info is awesome.
Foreflights weax overlay is nice, the runway warnings are useful, and the company is very professional.
Both programs have user interface oddities, like menus that have more items on them, but no way to tell unless you scroll and find out.
It boils down to personal preference... Or get both. And don't discount Garmin Pilot or the others. If you're a "keep it simple"-type, maybe SkyCharts Pro will work for you, or the Android moving maps like Naviator, Avilution, or even Avare.

Here is a little more information. I am coming up on my one year subscription and an considering both. I fly mostly in a zodiac 601xli with a built in GPS. I hate it its a rental plane so I like to use the iPad. I would say 90 percent of my flying is local so I really don't use it a whole lot. But I do use it on x-country. Foreflight is really easy to use which is why I picked it but terrain awareness especially leaving in the mountains near Tahoe CA makes me wonder if it would be better to go with xwing. Also how accurate is the agl readout.

My Foreflight altitude seems to be very accurate. More so than the Garmin GPS in my plane.

I'm currently using WingX Pro 7 Version 6.8, on an iPad 2 running IOS6. This combination adds some new features and improvements not present in previous versions/platforms. I've used it on XC flights (VFR only), and find it completely satisfactory for my needs. I've also used Foreflight, and frankly prefer it for IFR. So, it all depends on the kind of flying you're planning to do. At the price, I figure you can't go wrong with either (or even with both!)

AGL in WingX is pretty accurate, at least as accurate as the vertical component of GPS. There is an auto-calibrate function that seems to make it better. When I'm standing on the ground, it often says 0-30 ft AGL... close enough for me and every bit as accurate as the barometer-based stuff.
My WingX subscription just lapsed... I'm planning on renewing (probably 3 yrs), but am waiting to see if they'll finally announce an Android version.

I just did that 3 year special. Too good a deal to pass up.

When my foreflight subscription is up I think I am going to go with wingx. The features they offer for vfr flight seems worth learning how to use it. Thank you all for the feedback I really appreciate it.

when you zoom in or out with foreflight, it takes a second or two to redraw your map. With wingx it keeps your map up and loses nothing. Not a real big deal I guess but I like my screen to always be seen.
