I will do touch and goes with a pre solo student after they know and understand how to fly the pattern. When learning to fly you can practice climbs, turns, straight and level, and descents with and without flaps for extended periods of time. For most elements related to flying you can practice them for hours on end, but landings are different. Once the student has the pattern with all of these elements figured out the thing to work on is the actual landing. For each landing you have about 20 seconds that you learn or practice anywhere else. If you are taxiing back after each landing you will likely only get about 6 landings in a hour flight lesson, and that is only 2 minutes of landing practice. After the student can fly the pattern I prefer to do touch and goes to get more landing practice for an hour flight lesson. You can almost double the landing practice by doing T&G's. After all landings are the hardest thing for a student to learn, because it takes a 180 landings to get an hour of actual landing practice.

That shed some light on the issue!

I've owned my own airplane, since I got my PP ... I never had to worry "racking up hours" at $150/hour. Whether it took me 3 hours to do 10 landings or an hour to do 10 landings, it was irrelevant.

I probably never learned much about doing T&G' and feel uncomfortable with them, because I never had to do them.

Makes sense to me.

Most of my landing have been touch and go, as were most of my training landings. Of course this was on 5000ft+ runways where I could take off and land an LSA three times before reaching the end. On a 2000ft runway it's not as easy and not as safe.

I don't see anything inherently dangerous in the practice, but you have to assess whether to take off again each time. If you float and land long, or the aircraft is not stable on rollout (side-loaded, not aligned with the runway, etc), it's best to correct those issues and then taxi back around rather than proceeding to take off.

When I land for a touch and go, I consider it two operations: a landing and a takeoff. I think a big mistake is to combine the two into one procedure. Land fully, then reconfigure the airplane for takeoff and then perform the takeoff. "Touch and go" an inaccurate term, it's more like "land and go."

BTW, there *is* a middle ground, the "stop and go." Land, brake to a complete stop, and then reconfigure the airplane and do your takeoff. You even have time to run the pre-takeoff checklist if you want. This can work really well on a long runway; you get time to breathe, think, and discuss, but you don't waste a lot of time taxiing back. The downside is your usable runway is reduced by the distance you used to land. In my CT that is usually only a few hundred feet.

Just try not to come off as a know-it-all and try not to insult nearly everyone on the board and then we can all get along just fine.

As far as I can remember, there never was a war until he showed up.

I went out and did 2 touch and goes yesterday, followed by a power off approach and landing.

GoPro on my cap visor. Here's the first touch and go and the final landing:

Just as a reference for how I do them.

How do you attach the GoPro to your cap? I might want to try that.
