Holy cow, this airplane has been on a bad streak of luck. The crash site at Lake Berryessa is about 13 miles from my hangar and I fly over that lake a lot.

What a morbid thread title.

Agreed. Thanks for the heads-up.

I don't see this as a float plane issue. The thought of entering a canyon when I'm cruising around at 50 some knots really bothers me.

I canyon fly 3 days a week and even at 13,000' I want my AI to be reading 95 knots, spare energy can be useful for exiting a canyon in an emergency.

I'm unfamiliar with this area and only have seen the pictures from the crash site. From those, it appeared that the canyon "floor" was lake. With the luxury of time to consider options, was immediately landing in the water and taxiing out of the canyon an option for them at all? Or was it "we're screwed" situation once they made the turn into the wrong canyon?

Pretty narrow...likely the 'we're screwed' feeling.
