Whenever possible, I adjust course to put myself in a position for a 45° entry to downwind when I get there.
If I am approaching from the "wrong side" of the airport, I cross over at pattern altitude at or a little beyond the departure end of the runway... I announce it as crosswind and turn downwind from there. Few aircraft can reach pattern altitude by the end of the runway, but I will defiantly scrutinize that area while approaching and crossing
I normally fly low wing and midfield crossing and turning into downwind just strikes me as wrong.
