CTLS chuted down, FL

I'm glad that more people decide not to play super-pilot and try to land out, pulling the chute instead, even though CTLS has a smaller stall speed than Cirrus. That said, back pain, possibly back injuries for both occupants.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with making an emergency, off-airport landing. It just depends on the conditions. There are times when pulling a chute makes sense, but not in all conditions. There is no reason to over stress one option over the other.
Retired from flying.

How do you know the chute was deployed? I don't see anything in the article suggesting it. The BRS panel is missing, but there are no chute lines or apparent composite damage from the chute deployment along the wing roots in the picture. There is no entry I could find on Kathryn's Report.

Not sure what happened here.

Is it possible the chute wasn’t deployed, but was removed by the fire department?

No.
Not until the NTSB is finished.

If the chute is in the way getting to occupants, controlling the crash area, or presenting fire/explosion hazard, the emergency responders will remove it, NTSB be damned.

Found it on Kathryn's, but no additional information there.

I agree that the picture is odd with the hatch cover removed and a strap hanging out, but knowing the installation and how the harness is routed I don't see enough evidence to say there was a deployment. For those who don't know the forward attach points for the harness are on the motor mount, and the straps are routed in the structure of the upper cabin. The design is for them to pull through the structure on deployment. Also due to the rocket being positioned slightly outside of the opening for the hatch I would expect more damage in the area of the hatch.

I’m sticking to, the chute (rocket motor) was removed POST incident, by the FD.

It's a pretty good hypothesis.
