Sport Pilot Schools that Require a Medical - Help Stop This

As long as I have been flying (and that's more than half a century), glider pilots have been allowed to fly with neither an FAA medical nor a valid driver's license - and we've all seen how badly that's turned out.

Seeking a sport pilot certificate you must comply with the medical eligibility requirements established in § 61.3

A person must hold and possess either a valid medical certificate issued under part 67 or a current and valid U.S. driver's license when exercising the privileges of a student pilot certificate while seeking sport pilot privileges in a light-sport aircraft other than a glider or balloon.

A Sport Pilot does not need a medical certificate or a medical exam to fly as a Sport Pilot. A valid Drivers License is all that's needed, however, the FAA says that if you have a medical condition that you KNOW would make you ineligible to fly and would cause you to fail an AME medical exam, you should not fly.

It would be pretty tough for a glider to crash into a shopping mall and kill dozens of people with fuel and plane parts.

Killing dozens? It would be equally tough for a GA airplane to do that (which is why I can't recall a single such incident). It's easy to paint a pretty bleak scenario, but if the data doesn't bear it out, we must consider it an incredibly unlikely event.

NO! There is no medical needed to be a sport CFI.

I concur. Of course, the usual Sport Pilot caveat applies: you can have a lapsed medical, but it must not have been denied, revoked, or withdrawn.
