Re: True or Magnetic?
I am going through my ground school books and such for my Sport Pilot, and I am confused as to when one uses True North or Magnetic North. Is there some easy way to keep track of what to use when without riding around with the FARAIM in your lap? It just seems rather odd. Example (that everyone rea...

Re: Takeoffs and Landings in non-LSA towards passenger currency
"Airplane Single Engine Sea"
Even within the Sport Pilot/LSA Realm...Aircraft are placed in CATEGORIES (Airplane) and in CLASSES (SES).
Like you said, you will never find a multiengine LSA but every LSA fits in some category, and some class.

Re: Takeoffs and Landings in non-LSA towards passenger currency
On the 8710-11 Application for Sport Pilot's License, the "categories" are:
* Airplane
* Rotorcraft (gyro only)
* Glider
* Lighter-Than-Air
* Weightshift Control
* Powered Parachute
Paul Hamilton's website aligns with this.
Also with class being:
* land
* sea

Re: Takeoffs and Landings in non-LSA towards passenger currency
Paul & Crafty, Unless things in Part 61 have changed, Category = Airplane, Class = SEL. The AOPA says a Sport Pilot can do their Flight Review in a non-LSA. That would make me believe ANY recurring requirements for currency in LSA's can be done in non-LSA's of the same Category and Class. Off AO...

Re: Feasibility Question
What about the Garmin GTX-335 transponder with ADS-B out? I know a place in North Florida that will install it for $3700 plus tax. If this interested you let me know. It's not that far from you and it'll save you loads of cash. Shawn, So I can compare apples to apples, can you either put them in to...

Re: Feasibility Question
If I knew the 5300 spent would add 5300 in sell-able value, I'd do it in a second. I just like hearing other people's opinions. Knowledge is power. As a general rule, if you put $x into improving an aircraft's avionics, you can expect to recoup $x/2 when you sell. So, most of us invest in improveme...

Re: Feasibility Question
Bryan, I was going to do the Tail Beacon for ADS-B but now I'm faced with $5000 of new equipment OR training my daughter without ever going near Class C or B airspace. You might consider going with an Appareo's Stratus ESG transponder for around $2800 which is 'only' one AMU more than a tailBeacon....

Feasibility Question
It is known that many airplanes were sold with no electrical system and they are still flying. In reality, would it be realistic to do all your training in one and take your checkride in one of those? I.E. ...Would it be realistic to meet PTS requirements while only having flown in Class D, E, and G...

Re: The Sport Pilot Rating
In my experience, the FAA as a whole, has always been reasonable in my dealings with them. When I had to replace a bad exhaust valve in my IVO-360-A1A in my Brantly helicopter, my engine guy found that the engine crankcase was the correct item but in 1969, cylinders with the wrong part number were i...

Re: Himax
First Time, I admire your enthusiasm! Don't let that go away. We had a gang of ultralight guys that hung out at the airport in the 1990's. There was a purple and white Mini-Max in the group. The Mini-Max is the shoulder-wing father of the Hi-Max. That thing flew great. It had a Rotax 447 and that wa...

Re: The Sport Pilot Rating
Why don't you just pay a CFI to instruct her for her Private in your airplane? Because the personal gratification for the rest of her life and mine, knowing she will always be able to say..."My Daddy taught me to fly. I solo'd on my 16th birthday and took my checkride on my 17th birthday."...

Re: The Sport Pilot Rating
Although the hours can count for higher ratings, the privileges allowed a Subpart K CFI are limited (elsewhere in the regs) to instruction given solely in an LSA. So, it's that restriction which you'll be needing to get waived. I honestly don't know how likely that is. You are precisely correct. Al...

Re: The Sport Pilot Rating
But, the way my request is worded, and if approved, the conditions spelled out in the answer letter will have more muscle than the FAR's. What I am asking for is that a Subpart H CFI verify I have provided adequate instruction by doing several "Stage-Checks," much like a 141 schools do. Th...
