Re: In Memoriam: Muriel Hykes
Thank you, all my SPT friends, for all your help and support over these difficult past months. I realize I've been largely silent on these forums since I lost my wife. I'm now beginning to put my life back together, and re-order my priorities. I'm about to announce some major changes - stay tuned! S...

Re: McFarlane Throttle cable replacement?
I've never used the McFarlane throttle cable, but I did put a McFarlane choke cable on my old 06 SportStar about 15 years ago, and it worked out quite well.

Re: Rotax 912 ULS Resale value
Dave, after giving this some thought, I do believe that just replacing the gearbox and running the engine on condition is the right move. The engine should serve you well for a few hundred more hours, which for you should buy quite a few extra years of flying.

Re: Using autopilot in airspace while under ATC control
Autopilot is a great fatigue reliever on a long XC, Dave, weather you are receiving ATC services or not. Just remember that a vector being given you by a controller is a heading, and GPS ground tracks are courses. So make sure your autopilot is in heading mode, not course mode.

Re: new member from CA
I'm counting on the MOSAIC rule being implemented by the time I finish my training next year. Don't hold your breath - the gears of government grind more slowly than you can imagine. The average elapsed time between publishing a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and enacting a final rule is about 3 yea...

Re: Aircraft takeoff performance
Your assumption is correct, Dave. They can't be in the manual, because they do not comply with ASTM standards. But you can be pretty sure that most (if not all) LSA manufactures collect similar data for internal use.

Re: Aircraft takeoff performance
It's true that ASTM requirements for takeoff and landing distance data in the AOI are limited to a single example for sea level performance in standard atmosphere conditions. But many manufactures go beyond ASTM requirements (if not in the manual, then at least for internal use to document their fli...

Re: FAA Extends MOSAIC Comment Period from 10/23/2023 to 01/22/2024
Despite the 90 day extension, I managed to get my comments filed before the original deadline. For those interested in reading my filing, it can be found here:

I'm doing a lot of traveling currently, Chad, so best to coordinate this when you get closer. Ring me up at the contact number listed on my DPE website as you near completion of your training, and we'll work something out.

Where in Central CA are you based, Jim? Although I currently reside in PA, I am part owner of a private airport in Hollister (and, in fact, was just out there last week).

Re: Greetings from WV
Good to have you here, Chad. I run a small flight school and maintenance shop in Lock Haven PA, and have owned two SportStars. They make an excellent primary trainer (assuming you can find a CFI and mechanic who know the Sport Pilot and LSA rules!) If you have any questions, I'm here to help.

Re: If Cars Transitioned Without Full Touchscreens
Both of my planes have dual glass cockpits. One has touchscreens, the other doesn't. Care to guess which one I prefer to fly in turbulence?
