The uAvionix AV-20 is a useful little multifunction unit that includes transponder control. That’s another $900 + installation.

Note that I’ve looked into it, I realize that I can live without a transponder. I don’t frequent busy airports, and circumnavigating the occasional Mode C veil is no big deal.

So my mechanic says that my 912 is suffering from crankcase fretting. It’s done 900 hours toward its 1300 hr TBO. He suggests that a lighter prop will help. How much fretting is too much? Finally home! Really fun three day trip, with only a few moments of terror. I really enjoyed taking off half an hour before sunrise, and was happy to get on the ground when the turbulence kicked up across Nebraska, Wyoming, and especially Tahoe. Well, I chickened out. The surface winds are just too brutal to the west.
I hangared it in Kansas, and I’ll go back and get it when the winds are less vicious, and I’ve got more time.

Thanks, Jim! Still in Chanute, Kansas, waiting for the rain and low ceilings to clear. This should all clear out tomorrow. Plan is to head west at sunrise on Friday, hoping to get on the ground before the winds pick up. Then I’ll wait until the winds drop before a further flight west in the evening....

i do have the option of hangaring it here and coming back for it when winds are more favorable. But when is that? Winds in the SW seem to be crazy year-round.
