Re: Limit to 120 KCAS at sea level only with custom EMS - still an LSA?

Probably not, at sea level, standard atmosphere, and max continuous power (which is, after all, how Vh is defined). I have hit 127kt at 1500ft MSL on a 70°F day at 5500rpm. I have one of the faster CTs around. I don't know what that translates to CAS, but it might be greater than 120kt CAS. My only...

Re: How can I make an informed decision choosing between similar engines?

These are not quite apples-to-apples engines. The 915iS is a turbocharged engine and will make full power (141hp) to 15,000ft. So for $20k you have a 130hp NA engine, and for $40k you have a TC 141hp engine. Which is better? I dunno, what do you want to do with it? If you are a low-and-slow flyer wh...

Re: Takeoffs and Landings in non-LSA towards passenger currency

It's even murkier with an E-LSA, as "Experimental" is its own category. The Category on my CT's airworthiness certificate is "Experimental".

Does that mean I'm good to go if I do my currency checks in a Cozy, which is experimental but decidedly NOT an LSA?

Thanks FAA!

Yep, mine certainly was.
But it's a little different when your airplane *makes* money, instead of just burning it. :D

Re: Limit to 120 KCAS at sea level only with custom EMS - still an LSA?

The 120kt CAS limit is a limit for *manufacturers* to design to, not for pilots to abide by. Once an airplane is accepted by the FAA as an LSA, you as a pilot can wring whatever performance out of it that you can. If the aircraft type regularly and easily exceeds LSA performance limits, that's a pr...

That is true, though there are a lot of Avids around with 80hp and 100hp 912s.

Re: Aerotrek A220 and A240. What do you think?

Keep in mind an Aerotrek is basically an S-LSA Avid Flyer. You can spend $80k on an Aerotrek or buy an experimental Avid for about a third of that or less (my buddy got one that needed some work for $12k and has flown it for six years). No judgement on how you choose to spend your money, and some pr...

Re: LSA rental has inoperable fuel gauge. How to deal with school to fix it?

I have to admit I've developed a fondness for the sight tubes in my CTSW. As long as physics keeps working, they never lie* ! They are the only fuel management device in my airplane, and I've gotten very good at interpreting them to within a gallon or so. * This statement only remains true in coord...

Re: Rotax 912 ULS oil and cool/winter flying

A strip of aluminized tape across the oil cooler does wonders for keeping the 912 from running too cold in the winter. You might have to experiment a bit to get a feel for the right size for conditions. Just watch oil temps carefully after putting it on. That's the 20 cent solution. Here in Georgia ...

I use X-Plane 11 and DCS simulators with an Oculus Rift S VR headset. Nothing like seeing the world in steroscopic vision, and just swiveling your head to look around. It's immersive enough that you can get a little vertigo if you roll quickly into a high-g turn... SWEET! setup. Must be an amazing ...

My wife will fly with me, but there has to be a reason and a destination. Saving two hours by flying instead of driving to visit my Mom? Check! Flying from Georgia to Michigan to visit her Mom? Check! Flying in to a small airport for lunch? Check! Flying "around the patch" on a beautiful d...
