Re: GRS parachute repack

I had to do the repack + rocket replacement on my BRS a while back. It was around $4k and I had to do all the work of removing and installing, plus refueling the rocket. It was not hard but it is critical work if you want the chute to work... ;) Parachutes are great safety equipment, but they're not...

Re: CTSW vs. GX

I don't have any Remos Time, but I do own a CTSW. Any pros/cons of the two airplanes aside, as others said it really does come down to support. Remos is DOA or so close that it doesn't matter, while Flight Design is still delivering airplanes. If there were some significant damage, let's say the hor...

Re: Magnum, BRS, or GRS?

BTW I didn't think Paul was personally attacking me. I did however feel his comments were subtly poking at pilots that chose to use parachutes as part of their training procedures as somehow less well trained and/or more prone to poor decision-making.

Re: Comparing S-LSA to E-LSA insurance rates

FWIW, my new Bristell came in at just over $2600. That's with gazillion hours total time, including thousands in LSA, but I'm sure it's influenced by my age. The commercial policy on my SportStar (which is a flight school aircraft, used for primary training) has roughly the same hull value as the B...

Re: Magnum, BRS, or GRS?

Here's an alternative hypothesis, Andy. Isn't it possible that those who have 'chutes are more likely to pull them even when the situation is less hazardous than the pilot perceives (the attitude being "I have it, I might as well use it"? In such a case, wouldn't accident scenarios that m...

Re: Magnum, BRS, or GRS?

In general, off airport emergency landings in light singles have about a 25% fatality rate, and some types are MUCH higher (off airport landings in an RV-8 have about a 60% fatal rate). Now contrast that to the fatality rate of a BRS system used to forego an off-airport landing attempt, and deploye...

Re: Comparing S-LSA to E-LSA insurance rates

Clearly a negligible increase, Stan. But, what's your insurance up to now? Paul, the latest (May, 2020) was $1,415. No claims, no accidents, incidents, or pilot deviations ever. I think being 78 years old may have something to do with the increase. I'm a little over a year from being 80 and will pr...

Re: Comparing S-LSA to E-LSA insurance rates

I converted my SLSA to ELSA a few years ago. The insurance change was $0 with AIG. About how much are you paying? I got quotes last fall for switching to ELSA and it would have meant a 75% increase for me. $1250 annually at last renewal. I highly recommend Chris Wolbert at Aviation Insurance Resour...

Re: Magnum, BRS, or GRS?

Personally ,if given enough reasonably clear space to land, I would always opt for a normal emergency landing but ... if you are out of options, even most skillfully executed emergency landing will result in about 35-45 mph forward velocity impact which is much more likely to result in a serious in...

Re: Magnum, BRS, or GRS?

Perhaps I am missing something here ,but are there any downsides to having another safety device like BRS onboard ? In a Cirrus, no downside at all. LSAs are another matter, because they are useful load challenged already. For the weight of a BRS, I can carry an extra hour of fuel. In most accident...

Re: LSA Safety Concerns/Fears

I think it's generally true that accident rates are higher in LSA, but *fatal* accident rates are not. You're dealing with low weight, low inertia, low stall speed airplanes. While there are certainly fatal accidents, most accidents are landing or takeoff directional control accidents as a result of...

Re: G3X cross country student

Unless regularly practiced ( which it won’t be since pretty much everyone relies on technology ) nobody will remember this stuff anyway. I am not going to be paper planning every time just to account for a minuscule chance of encountering a GPS wasteland ... and if I do encounter one, I surely won’...

Ha, when I did my training a decade or so ago I was not allowed to bring a GPS on either my cross country or my checkride.
