Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

Nice set up!
Agree about perception.

I was told at Sebring that i could build an RV-12 myself i just needed some household tools and the space to do it.
It’s not true and i post it for those who’re contemplating building for their benefit or is it
“Eddiefication?”

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

The points I made about building from the kits versus buying factory assembled, and going from SLSA to ELSA, is that I have been continually told since I acquired my plane that building the Vans kit is very straightforward requiring only a few tools like those folks have around their house. That goi...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

I know a guy who bought one of the first RV-12 SLSAs. He's not an A& P but he went and took a couple of the courses which enable hime to work on his own plane and do the annual. Last I heard from my Rotax mechanic, who knows him better than I do, was that he was still trying to complete the annu...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

Eddie my calculations are very close to your costs. I did have an additional big item the Sprag Clutch that I did. I wish I could have got another 20 hours in, but like you things got in the way. http://www.rv12pilot.com/vaf/flt%20hours.JPG Bottom line like the Master Card commercial should say &qu...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

That’s what my wife and I did! Hope it goes as well for you and your family! Um I’m not breaking Paul’s heart today...25F and overcast in SC when I flew this morning. Rotax started right up but I added an extra strip of metal tape and the oil temp was 219 and coolant just barely in green to provide ...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

Jim Don’t know how or why you think my post was directed at ‘not buying an airplane’? You mention ‘ my money’ and i’m flattered but frankly I’m simply comfortable enough to buy a medium priced light sport. You stated you’ve previously owned three planes, race cars and hope to leave a million bucks e...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

[quote="Nomore767"][quote="WDD"]Good things to think about. So, if I take the RV12 example posted above. If I figure I paid $75k used for it, and if I had left the money in an S&P500 Index fund, it would get me after taxes about $5000. Add another $10 per each of the 81 hours...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

I’m the same as Eddie. I have several discount 93 ethanol stations near me and on the way to the field. The supply of non-ethanol dried up last year. I have 3 x 5 gallon cans and a 2.5 gL. I typically refuel to full after every flight. The empty weight of 760 allows for full fuel and two 210 lb pass...

Re: Annual Expense in Owning an ELSA (Good News & Bad News)

For comparison: RV-12 SLSA Flew 90 hours. Down this year due trips to see family in UK and frustrating weeks down waiting for slow ass maintenance shop on field for what turned out to be loose wire. My Rotax guy much more reliable. Hangar $165 month including electric Gas :premium auto either free u...

Re: Cold day in Maine and the last flight for 2017

Yikes!

I thought it was chilly here in SC yesterday with temps around 41F! Even so I had the metal stip on and kept the temps the same as you and the "heating system" kept it warm at 5500' where it was only 5C.

Happy New Year!

Re: Oil temperature during cold months

I installed the shutter from Van's and modified it for the RV12 when I lived in PA and now live in Maine and fly well below zero most of the winter. I can keep my temps up. Slight mod to make it larger to fit over the oil cooler. http://rv12pilot.com/vaf/shutter%204.jpg http://rv12pilot.com/vaf/shu...

Hence the move from PA!
