Re: Will the wife fly with you?? Is a 2 seater overkill for me?

When was the wife last up in an airplane? Maybe buy a "discovery flight" from your local school, and the CFI (not you) takes her up. Maybe she'll like it, maybe not. Also, rent for a while to see what you really like, and then buy or join a club if you want. Renting is always cheaper than ...

Re: LSA rental has inoperable fuel gauge. How to deal with school to fix it?

If it is part of the MEL, how can it pass the next 100 hour inspection? Might want to mention that to the owner of the aircraft. Get it on the schedule now, because if you wait until it fails the 100 hour it could be a lot of extra time just waiting to get on the list, let alone the time for the act...

Re: True or Magnetic?

Want another headache? VOR's are Magnetic. So if you're on the VOR north radial, it's magnetic north. Magnetic North as determined when the VOR was put into service. Might not have been / probably has never been changed over the years. So if its 30 years old and given the magnetic north has shifted,...

Re: Old School or Modern School

As always, you are correct. Which is why I bought the Sporty's. I do find myself pulling it out and using it post taking the written test, so the $80 investment will be used from time to time. For me, the speed, accuracy, and peace of mind not having to deal with pencil dots and spinning and ...

Re: Old School or Modern School

I used Gleim. I liked their on line testing, but the book is somewhat out of date, a bit hard to follow in places, etc. One is a chapter dedicated on how to use the manual wheel slide rule E6B. I have never had a need and will never have a need to use that the rest of my life. I did get the Sporty's...

Puzzle solved! Yeah, I knew the FAA army of FAR commandos couldn't have let that go unplugged LOL. Thank you gentlemen.

Basic Med Loop Hole?

As odd as it seems, I sometimes see the FAA regulations as a fun puzzle. Yes, I did say "as odd as it seems". You can get a sport license and fly without a 3rd class medical ASSUMING you've never been denied or had your medical revoked. Basic Med requires that you have had a valid 3rd clas...

Re: Logbook question

You cited a Part 61 FAR. Part 61 are the flight training rules. Unless you are training to upgrade to Private Pilot, you are flying under Part 91. If you are training to upgrade to Private, you can do solo hours in an LSA without needing any endorsements. To solo a 172, you could get a solo PIC end...

Re: Looking for a CFI - not that easy

UPDATING OLD THREAD So, I moved to ATL area for a job change. Great, must be a lot of LSA's for rent around here, more than my old town of Louisville. Nope. So, bit the bullet, got a 3rd class, took the PPL written, and restarted flight training in spring of 2019 (do not recommend taking a year off ...

Re: Here are my finances. I need your help please.

WWDRD What Would Dave Ramsey Do? You need a lot more than $23k in the bank. $1000 emergency fund, 6 months of income should one or both of you loose your job ($60k?), max your 401K's / IRA's. Got kids? College fund. With a plane, you should also have some sort of emergency fund least a broken widget...

Re: New to aviation / LSA

You always have the option of finding a "traditional" CFI flying a "traditional" plane (like a Cessna 172, etc.) and doing much of your training with that. Would be a lot closer (assuming you can find a willing CFI). Then go to a Sebring / etc. to finish up with your solo, etc. t...

Don't get me wrong - I don't have a dog in this fight either way.

I'm just speculating on what buyers may be thinking, and thus what could be driving the low demand and low prices.

Re: Why are 162s so cheap

I think you also need to look at the performance. How much will it carry, speed, etc. It has an empty weight of 830 lbs., which means 2 grown male adults and a few misc items leaves only 90 lbs available for 15 gallons of fuel - or 2 hours with 30 min reserve. And that is at 110 kts per the spec she...

Re: The Sport Pilot Rating

Yes, I feel the pain here. Lack of Sport CFI's, and lack of Sport Planes to rent. BUT.... Any CFI can give you training hours up to solo in a non LSA plane, and they all count. You do need to go through several CFI's to find one that that will work with you - for some reason if they know you won't d...

Re: Piper announces new trainers

And I just read where ATP flight school just bought...... 100 Cessna Skyhawks. Nope, not the 2 (or 3 seat for IFR) Piper. In a way it makes sense. A 4 place plane has more flexibility than a 2 place plane as it has probably more weight capacity, is larger and doesn't get pushed around as much in win...
