Re: Vx or Vy and why?

I understand that Vx is the best rate of climb and Vy is the best rate. Vx for clearing obstacles and Vy to get up there quicker. However, wouldn't Vx help make the impossible turn a little less impossible? What does your experience say when climbing out? Even without an obstacle? -Tony I think you...

Re: To turn or not to turn

Timely article from Pilot Workshop: https://pilotworkshop.com/tips/engine-fail-takeoff/?utm_source=tptw&utm_medium=email&utm_term=1-30-2019&utm_campaign=tip Basically, they did tests of real pilots in Beech Bonanza simulator and most failed miserably at various altitudes. He didn't menti...

Re: My New-to-me Cirrus

Yeah -- the 3-star Michelin dinner almost convinced me to go for the $1.1M Turbo SR-22 versus the 15 year old NA SR-22 I went with...

Re: My New-to-me Cirrus

In this case, the total fuel would've been about the same. The route I took in the SR22 would not have been practical or safe in the Sting. A more prudent route for the Sting would've been more southerly down through CA then through southern AZ and NM to avoid the much higher terrain. With similar w...

Re: My New-to-me Cirrus

I took off from Aurora (the home of Vans) so my route was a bit south of Mt. Hood. I'm pretty sure that this particular peak is Mt. Jefferson.

My New-to-me Cirrus

I know this is neither light sport nor sport pilot eligible but given I've been a member here for 11 years thought I post a bit about my trip to pick up my 2002 SR22 G1 from Portland, OR this past weekend. I posted earlier that my mission changed such that I needed an IFR traveler. Well, N810PT show...

Re: ADS-B for Evektor Sportstar?

That looks very much like the panel of my first SportStar, Dave. Its S/N is 2006-0810. What's yours? It is S/N 2006-0708 I am trying to figure out how to get ADS- out on the cheap. I am looking to see if there is a way to incorporate a "skyBeacon" on the wingtip. A complication is the exi...

iFly GPS Pilot Advisory Board

I made a shameless plug a month or so ago about my new gig as VP of Business Development for iFly GPS. I've been in the commercial software biz for my entire career and believe strongly that the market and customers guide the product suite. One of the best mechanisms for hearing the market in my exp...

A bittersweet day

Well, 595L has a new owner as of this past Saturday. It was an absolutely gorgeous day to fly in North Texas with light winds and blue skies. I ferried the plane 90 miles north, taking the long way and turning a 50 minute flight into 90 to enjoy every minute of my last Sting flight. The gods were sm...

Re: Aerovoltz Lithium-Iron batteries

Just curious on battery capacity. The Sting series use a much smaller battery. In Odyssey-speak this is the PC310 which seems to have around 60% of the power vs the PC680 (and weights 11 pounds less). I've never had any trouble starting the Sting and the life of the battery seems to be the same. So ...

I'm probably adding gasoline to the fire but can't resist.....

So I assume everyone is paying their state's Use Tax for all those tax free items they order from Amazon?

Re: To turn or not to turn

And to add to Paul and Eddie's comments, have a plan before you take off for the specific airport/runway you are on. For my Sting taking off to the north at T31: * If engine quits below 800' AGL, continue straight over the fields and pull chute * If engine quits above 800' AGL, execute turn back to ...
