By golly - I'm REALLY Flying! Well it feels that way anyhow

Post by chicagorandy »

Good news - my Covid Quarantine present to myself - a Logitech Pro Yoke and Throttle Quadrant arrived three days ago and like EVERYTHING that I allow into my house was immediately wiped down with bleach disinfectant solution and put into my Coronavirus package and mail 72 hour quarantine zone. (Yes everything, groceries too. lol

So.. I just now finished assembling it. Turns out that all I had to do to mount it to my computer desk sliding keyboard tray was unscrew the tray, reverse it and screw the tray back on. Just four screws held it to the drawer rails. This extended the tray a few more inches out from the desk so now the clamps fit just fine, it is snug as a bug in a rug and the keyboard tray does not move in and out when I use the yoke - YAY! Score one for the retired geezer. Take that, technology! lol

Flight Sim X recognized the Saitek yoke as soon as I plugged it into my desktop PC's USB port - couldn't be an easier fool-proof process.

I've only done a couple very brief test takeoffs from Midway Airport so far. Initially there was considerable 'lag' between yoke input and the screen movement, so I adjusted the sim settings to max sensitivity and Voila! The lag is gone. My inputs just about match what I see on the screen to a "T".

Having this 'real life sized' (kinda) yoke and quadrant vs my former Cyborg joystick upgrades my flight sim experience in an instant quantum leap. I just know I'm gonna luv it! The only 'downside' I can see is that NOW I want a 36" or larger monitor - oh, and maybe rudder pedals? LOL

Unless you are simulating flight in a Ercoupe, you should definitely add the Saitek (or equivalent) rudder pedals ASAP. Otherwise, you're only learning to be an airplane driver, not a pilot.

I still play X-plane 11 now and then ... and I do have rudder pedals.

Now , there is no TL Sting plane available for XPlane-11 but they do have the light sport Remos GX model and when I was training in the real thing ( got about 30 hours on Remos planes ) I used to fly it and I can tell you that it was easier to handle/land the plane in real life than in the sim.
The basic problem with PC sims is that you have only visual feedback which is kind of limiting.

In window shopping on Amazon today, I did see a very nice 32" curved HD monitor to replace my 23" flat screen and I kinda like that rather pricey MFG Crosswind rudder pedal dealie, but would probably save a Benjamin and just go with the Logitech model?

C'mon you stimulus money! - LOL

The dangerous combination of a few extra bucks at the end of a month (since all the casinos are closed-lol), and MY total lack of willpower, fiscal responsibility and patience has been keeping this economy fueled for decades. lol

The new flight sim gear wasn't set up for even 72 hours before I was on Amazon buying a 32" curved gaming monitor to replace my 23" flat screen- LOL It should arrive in a week or so. I will post a new pic when it arrives...……. my newly purchased Video graphics card to upgrade my older Dell 3847 Windows 10 desktop arrives Sunday to take advantage of the new monitor's capabilities. It looks to be an easy, quick DIY install project.

In case you wondered, when I was married - NO, I in fact NEVER questioned why my wife's new hairdo simply required her to buy new clothes, shoes and purses to match it. I completely understand and support that buying thought processes.

Ah, but when you were married, did your wife similarly understand your flying addiction?

It took me 30 years to recognize that the two GREATEST letters of the alphabet to come before the word "wife" were the letter "E" followed by the letter "X".

It only took me 20 years to figure that out, Randy (even though my ex was a pilot). But I must have forgotten, because a few years later, I remarried! (This one's lasted 27 years now, and seems to be working. Probably because she's not a pilot.)

We tried the 72 hour quarantine, but the milk, meat, and cheese got to stinking.

Tom, I'll bet you forgot to wipe down your milk, meat, and cheese with a 10% Clorox solution. That would have given them a different smell altogether.

I do believe that some Logitech rudder pedals just 'might' feel the wrath of my Covid Stimulus $$ - and yes indeed, I did find a simply Jim-dandy of an Ercoupe 415-C software add-on for a very reasonable price (about $11) on the flight sim market. Thankfully its original owner did NOT do the rudder pedal upgrade - lol

I may not be the brightest bulb on the Xmas tree, but when a true expert in the field offers me free advice? I take it to heart. My Amazon order for some sim rudder pedals has been placed and they arrive Thursday.

I use X-Plane 11 and DCS simulators with an Oculus Rift S VR headset. Nothing like seeing the world in steroscopic vision, and just swiveling your head to look around. It's immersive enough that you can get a little vertigo if you roll quickly into a high-g turn...

SWEET! setup. Must be an amazing sim experience.

My 32" curved monitor arrived today, a couple PC upgrades and rudder pedals will arrive before the week is out. Looking on YouTube there are a couple of EXTREME flight simmers who have purt near a full-boat 172 or 737 cockpit in their game cave - lol

Discretionary big bucks a wonderful thing I'm told. lol I stopped imagining such a setup here in my bungalow when I found out how much three 55" gaming monitors cost. LOL

The great thing about VR is you can do away with a lot of the sin hardware. If you have a good stick and throttle, all the other switches and controls are at your virtual fingertips. I never realized how annoying the switch locations for lights are on a 172 until I had to find them under the yoke and flip them in VR...

And VR is cheap too...a good VR headset is only about $350 these days.
