Incomplete PPL maybe Sport Pilot instead?

Incomplete PPL maybe Sport Pilot instead?

Post by colored-blind »

I am currently getting my PPL through a US military Flying club in Europe. If I don't get the hours this year to get my PPL and have to move for some reason can I use those hours towards a Sport Pilot Licence?

Are the Sport Pilot License/ Certifcate Written, Oral and Practical Exams easier than the PPL. Besides night flying what is left out?

As long as the aircraft you are flying is N registered and your flight instructor is certified through the FAA, your hours will count.

The sport pilot written is 10 questions shorter. There will be no questions about radio navigation. It tends to have less or no math questions on it as well.

The sport pilot practical has a stronger emphasis on pilotage and dead reckoning for the navigation part. Generally you can use the GPS on the PP exam but not the SP exam. The PP exam has unusual attitudes while the SP exam has no hood work.

It you plan to continue flying internationally, you may wish to stick with a PPL as it is recognized international while a SPL is not.

Depending on where in the states you wind up will determine if sport pilot is doable or not. There is only one light sport plane in southeastern Virginia and if you find as I have that you don't care for that one plane then there is NO other option but to do what I'm doing and switch up and go fly 172's and such towards a ppl.
While sport looks attractive I and many like me have found it not doable. I wouldn't recommend light sport to anyone in this area, I really wish it was different but it ain't.
