shot down

Post by Cub flyer »

thought this was funny. off the Short Wing Piper List. I've had bullet holes in the cub but always in the wing, never the fuselage. This poor guy was not as lucky.

bout the Beeville thing. I was flying along the Rio Grande somewhere
around Donna or Harlengen in a gray and red Tripacer, which happened to be
the same color as the Border Patrol Supercubs. Apparently some illegal
alien was a better shot than he was at aircraft ID and put a round about 6"
to the left of my butt. I heard the impact and smelled gas so I beat a
hasty landing on an irrigation levee. Jumped out and stuck my finger in the
hole, but after a couple of minutes snapped to the futility of that
enterprise so I just shut off the left tank and let the fuel run. Took off
on right and headed for home. Somewhere around Beeville and much farther
from home than I anticipated, the motor started to poop so I saw Beeviulle
NAS in the distance and set up a glide for it (any old port in a storm).
Rolled out with a dead motor and was met by a troop of SP's with drawn
weapons. THe next few hours was spent moving up the food chain, tryng to
explain how anyone could be shot down in a Tripacer. The Marine full bird
finally gave me 5 gallons of 140 and told me to "GET THE HELL OFF OF MY
BASE" To this date, I may still be the only guy ever shot down in a
Tripacer

Dave

Nice story. I moved from that area (Harlingen) 2 years ago. That's where the CAF was stationed (Confederate Air Force) back in the days.

Off the short wing piper list

Apparently this is more wide spread than I originally thought. Watch your bottom out there. Maybe Oregon aero will sell seat cushions with an iron bottom.

Since there is legal goings on related to this I left out the posters name

Subject: [Swpc] took a bullet

I was shot at yesterday and hit while flying on a
test flight. The bullet went through the elevator. Frank , the A & P, was
standing outside the hangar and knows right where the shots came from.
Frank said the guy fired three times. I guess he didn't lead me enough
since the bullet went through the elevator. The sheriff was called. The
deputy came up and took notes, called for backup, and went to the guys house
to arrest him. Don't know what has happen from there. We are going down to
get restraining orders on the guy because the deputy said he guy will get
out on bail and won't be happy. We are also going to wear side arms because
we don't know when the guy is going to pop around the corner of the hangar
with intent to do harm. The deputy said it is another piece of paper that
gives us more rights.

This person has done this before but I could never prove he was actually
shooting at the aircraft. I also reported him once before because I thought
he took a shot at me while I was standing outside the hangar. He also fired
a volley of 10 to 15 shots when my neighbor landed on Sept 3. There was no
proof the rounds were being shot at the aircraft..until yesterday.

This is the third time I have been hit by ground fire. Shot down in Laos,
took a hit over Hanoi, and now this. Things happen in three's so I'm home
free nowJ
