Flight of 2 Kitfoxes cross the Great Salt Lake, UT

Post by SkySteve »

My flying buddy and I met at the Ogden, UT airport on Saturday, November 15, 2008 to clean our planes. After goofing off for a while we decided to go flying as a flight of two.

We discussed lots of places to go, then decided to go someplace new. Neither of us had flown to the Utah/Nevada border town of Wendover so that became the goal. We left mid afternoon and returned at sundown. It was a great flight, flying over 14 miles of water :? , then between 2 military Restricted Zones  and finally crossing about 100 miles of the Utah West desert  to Wendover!

Come on, take the flight with us!

Miles and miles of nothing but desert:

Yes, more desert:

Salt ponds. This is where your table salt comes from:

Salt ponds 2: They capture the salt water of the Great Salt Lake, allow the water to evaporate in the sun, then scoop up the salt with loaders and ship it to your dinner table!

Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. We flew over 14 miles of nothing but water to arrive at this island. There are over 600 bison roaming this island. No need for fences!

Most of the time the winds are 6 knots or less. But, when they start to blow across the desert it's time to get on the ground, because they can really blow. Nothing there to slow them down.

Within 100 miles of where these photos were taken the mountains go well over 10,000'. The desert itself is at 4100'. This is the area of the Bonneville Salt Flats where the land speed records are set.

Steve - those pictures are fantastic. What a great flight - and what a great area to go flying.

Say, how long have you been flying? Where'd you get your sport pilot training? Was your training in a Kitfox?

Thanks
Tom

I'm one of those OLD guys that didn't start until late in life. Always wanted to fly, life just kept getting in the way. I got my ticket Sept, 2007 at Cornerstone Aviation in Ogden, UT.

The school had a Tecnam Sierra which I flew. I purchased the Kitfox about half way through my lessons and hired an A&P to convert it from a taildragger to a nosewheel. The conversion was just completed in September, 2008.

I've got 21 hours on the plane in the last 2 1/2 months. I love it. There are several Kitfoxes based at Ogden, UT (that's also where I hanger mine). I have really fallen in love with flying and at age 58 feel like a young kid again!!
