The Corona Virus is putting a dent on my meet ups.

So my friends flying club was having a meet up for lunch at KAQW. I was all set to go it's just a little over an hour from me. I tell the wife and she nixes the idea she's afraid I could catch something. Same applies to me just going somewhere by myself. Geez. So looks like I'll just be cruising around the neighborhood aimlessly.

It's not smart for ANY meetups right now. Better for you to stay safe and keep your family safe. At least for me I can go to the airport, not see or talk to anyone and hop in my plane and get away from the virus. I also cycle for fun and exercise and have been cycling by myself instead of with my normal 20+ other riders. It's just not worth the risk right now.

Of all things I would not go for a meetup right now unless it was 1 on 1 or something like that where I know the person ... I am all against wild panic that seem to be the norm right now and I think , if for any reason , this nation will eventually perish due to the all-paralyzing and nonsensical "abundance of caution" that seems to be infiltrating every aspect of our lives , but that's different than taking unnecessary risk ...

As Shawn says, go flying , days are now longer -that's what I did this morning ...

So being there are no meet ups, I decided I might as well make my flying productive. Left work a little early yesterday and did a little flying. Did a touch and go at KISP, a class C and then KFOK a class D before heading back to KHWV. Made good use of my ADS-B in as there was a bit of traffic along the South Shore of Long Island. All in all a good bit of fun.

Wonder when they are going to shut down VFR flying as they did in Europe ...

I'm heading out tomorrow morning for another flight myself. I topped off last Saturday at a nearby airport and I'm gonna go burn some fuel. That damn virus can't catch me at 3500 feet.

I'm doing the same thing, Shawn. Tanks are full and tomorrow morning's forecast is sunny and cool.

How are you gonna do that given your newly instituted martial law in CA ?

I was up Wednesday, social distancing for a couple of hours, at FL055. Did a touch and go at two airports enroute, before heading back following local roads to the airport.

We’re on Day 2 of “sheltering in place” here in E TN. As pilots, we should be familiar with the concept of Most Conservative Action, and I think this fits the bill. Without widespread testing, there’s simply no way to know how prevalent the virus is in your area, so best to avoid as much contact as possible. We’re fortunate that, being retired, it’s not a huge hardship in general. But it’s especially hard on Karen, who wants to be close to her family here, but her daughter-in-law works at a daycare (for now) and she the grandkids are almost perfect vectors for the virus.

The New York Times has a daily podcast called, appropriately, “The Daily”. Several days ago they had an extended interview with a Doctor in Italy. I won’t detail it here, but it was both chilling and heartbreaking at the same time. New York City and it’s surrounds are maybe 2 weeks or so of being a mirror image of that. That’s not sensationalizing, it’s nearly a mathematical certainty.

To be clear, I’m not “panicking” - I’m quite calm and resigned to the whole fiasco. Just trying to act in a rational manner after processing the best available information.

C'mon man, the stay at home order is not martial law. Businesses that will remain open to the public include Pharmacies; Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, takeout and delivery restaurants; Banks; Gas stations; Laundromats/laundry services; Essential state and local government functions including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.

Businesses that will be closed include Bars and nightclubs, Entertainment venues, Gyms and fitness studios, Public events and gatherings, Convention Centers, and Dine-in restaurants.

Driving from my house to my hangar, pulling out my airplane and pre-flighting, taking off, flying, landing, putting my plane back in the hangar, and driving home I won't have to physically come close to anyone else. It's no different than driving to the gas station and using self-service with alcohol wipes at the pump, filling the tank in my car, and driving home.

Sheesh!

That's common sense and I very much agree with it but that's not what the order says - you are breaking their "no non-essential travel" rules and the only reason you can get away with it is because they cannot enforce it :D

I take the threat very seriously and am observing the precautions recommended by Tony Fauci and the infectious disease professionals, unlike many in authority who until very recently denied the science claiming Covid-19 was no more serious than a cold. It took three months to reach 100,000 coronavirus cases worldwide; the second 100,000 only took 12 days. Based on current statistics, the fatality rate among those infected with Covid-19 is ten times greater than the rate of those infected by the flu.

Its been quite the roller coaster ride here in Central Louisiana. At first our company doctor held an info session that basically said its not an issue, don't worry. Then it showed up in New Orleans and all hell broke loose, he quickly changed his tune. Our weather has been horrible and my schedule nuts so I have been essentially grounded for a month. Since I rent I don't mind taking time off, nothing out of my pocket, but I do miss getting up and doing some sight seeing if nothing else. Maybe when this all calms down, if I still have some money left and a job, I'll get back up in the air.

Looks like IL is joining 2 other states in what amounts to economic and generational suicide ( in slow motion, for now) without any cost analysis or any hard data whatsoever.

I am working for a financial industry which actually happened to be involved in , among other things, maintaining and providing money for municipal and state employees (payroll etc ) so we will be pretty much exempted since these governmental f****ers ALWAYS get paid even if the world burns around them and tens of thousands people are being laid off but ... will see.

If this turns out to be another bullshit scare , I hope people who issued and are responsible for these orders will end up in jail.
