Sport Pilot to Private Pilot - Glider

Post by AviatorCrafty »

Went up for my Private Pilot - Glider checkride yesterday, it was an interesting process for sure, wanted to share my experience here for anyone considering getting into gliding as well.

-First, if you only have a sport pilot certificate, you'll need to complete the Private Pilot - Glider written test, I used the ASA test prep on my iPad then used their online test prep to get the endorsement.

-Flight requirements, the FARs state for anyone with more than 40 hours of flight time needs only 3 hours total glider time and 10 solo flights, I'd say I was ready at about 5 hours of glider time, although I ended up with 8 before my test since I kept flying while waiting for the weather to cooperate for my checkride.

-Prepare to be misunderstood haha, I found myself having to explain sport pilot a lot

Overall Gliding is very fun and a great rating to go for, you can get rated at the private, commercial, and CFI level without a medical in gliding.

Congratulations! I find sport pilot is less understood in the glider side of things compared to airplanes. It does have some usefulness on the glider side that has not been discovered yet.
