Impact of new LSA rules on renting

Was curious what you guys thought on how the new LSA rules might potentially play out in terms of rentals. I'm personally excited at the potential opportunity to rent 150/152/172/PA28 type aircraft, but I'm curious how FBOs/flight schools will allow it, will they honor the sport certificate + driver's license medical or will they honor the sport certificate but require a full medical? As the regs stand now, I have to drive a tad over an hour to rent a present-day LSA, but there's an airport 10 minutes from me with a flight school with decently equipped 172s for less than I pay for the LSAs, so hope to be able to fly from there when things get finalized.

The problem is, it's going to be a couple of years before anything is finalized. THEN, we don't know for sure if it's really going to include the 150, 172, etc. It looks like they may even add a new "class" (LPV?). Medical required.

Someone's overly optimistic today aren't they?

I find it funny when people try to assume what the FAA is going to do, and when. I urge anyone who's sitting around and waiting for the FAA to act, please go flying and enjoy it.

According to Dan Johnson, all present-day LSA will be a subset of LPA, so all LSA will be LPA but not all LPA will be LSA. But my question is, how does creating a new category of aircraft solve the issue when all anyone wanted was to fly a 172 on a sport certificate.

It does not.
FAA ( and most government agencies in general ) direct most of their efforts towards justifying their continuous existence.
Sometimes these goals produce what you and I would consider a reasonable set of rules and sometimes not - from our point of view it tends to result in pretty much random outcomes ...so we will just have to wait and see.

Yeah things don't make sense sometimes with the FAA

They are, after all, a government agency. Why, or how, on earth would you expect anything different?

NEVER forget that the official motto of the FAA is - "We're not happy until YOU'RE not happy."
