Wow. I barely learned how to spell LPA, and it's already not a thing. I thought only internet memes could come and go that fast.

Now this is a change I never saw coming, of course if it's true. As long as I'll be able to fly a 172/Cherokee type aircraft I'll be happy as then that opens up so many rental places to me.

We all know how fickle the FAA is. They were so set on the LPA idea but later threw it in the trash. I would hazard a guess that their intention is to allow 172s to be available to sport pilots because they are so common. I hope they'll allow retractable landing gear and night flight using endorsements, just like they do for existing sport pilot privileges. This is according to someone who talked to the FAA:
My advocacy partner, Roy Beisswenger, who attended several FAA briefings, said, “The key phrases to come out of an FAA meeting was that LSA should be defined as “easy to fly” or “docile to fly” and then let the industry define exactly what that means.” He added, “Different weights and categories of aircraft would be allowed as endorsements.” Endorsements have already been used with good success for basic Sport Pilots to advance their privileges.
Unless the FAA changes their mind (again) and decides to expand LSA but require a PPL to use the new privileges, things are looking up.

I don’t have much use for retracts ..a few additional knots is not worth the inevitable insurance pain.
Will see …

Saw this in an AOPA article in regards to LODA https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all ... etter-word:
Regarding MOSAIC, the modernization of special airworthiness certificates, Dickson said the effort to improve and simplify approvals for aircraft and modifications is in rulemaking and will be released in September 2023, many years after it was first conceived. Among the changes, though, will be an expansion of the LSA rule to encompass four-place aircraft and to allow for electric propulsion.

Concur totally.

A tiny bit more info from just yesterday: https://bydanjohnson.com/midwest-2021-d ... g-the-fox/

Good news is the FAA looks eager to expand LSA and allow much more capability. Bad news is the guys who deal with pilot privileges, Flight Standards, are going to be the ones who determine who gets to fly these expanded LSAs. They seem open to using endorsements which I hope will mean that no medical is required for getting retract endorsements or higher speed endorsements but they might hate giving us nice things so much that they'll say you need a PPL complete with 3rd class medical to make use of any expanded LSA endorsements.

I don't mind getting training for expanded privileges but I do mind having to risk permanent grounding if I try to get an SI and fail.

Even if we were allowed to fly four-seaters, wonder if we'd still be restricted to one passenger still like the recreational certificate.

Probably, but that's fine for me because it would open up more rental options.

And a night flight endorsement.
They could even place some sort of an hour requirement for endorsements.
Treating pilots with hundreds of hours as if they are beginners is ridiculous.
