Making an LSA available to you...

There's been much discussion here on the limited availability of LSA a/c. If that fits your circumstances, you might want to look into AOPA's newly announced Flying Club initiative.

The operative word here is initiative. If a group of pilots is willing to take the initiative, they can make this work. But, sitting around waiting for the local FBO to put an LSA on the flight line, and complaining when they don't, isn't going to get them anywhere.

Exactly. And we've also discussed how to find or form a partnership (in order to make an a/c available and affordable) here many times, as well. BUT...the reason this new program deserves an acknowledgment is that there is now some structured help and resources available, and it comes from a org...which mat prove helpful when one explores the possibilities locally.

I think starting a LSA or Sport Pilot flying club and starting a network of LSA/ Sport Pilot flying clubs is a great idea. I think there are a number of pros such as purchase price for an LSA is divided among the club members. One of the cons would be getting this started up. It's easier said than done to start up a sport pilot flying club, especially if it is hard to get enough demand around your area for it. Maybe the flying club could allow student sport pilots into the club. I know that some clubs won't even allow student pilots to be a flying club member. Those clubs usually require at least PPL.

Which was the motivations behind AOPA's decision to provide support services for this idea. Lots of benefits -to a degree, the same as forming a simpler partnership - but yes, some effort is required. No free lunch...
