Private Pilot flying under Sport Pilot Privledges

OK, got a question which came up recently. I was flying with a friend who's medical had expired but who had a valid flight review, drivers liscense and was operating as a sport pilot when PIC. We had a discussion on whether or not we could do a few touch and go's at the local class D airport if he was the PIC. Since I was PIC at the time and have a valid Private and medical it was not an issue, but it was an intriguing question: Can a private pilot flying under sport pilot privileges fly into controlled airspace without a sign-off? Technically, the pilot holds a private certificate, but your also not technically flying under those rules, as a sport pilot you would need a separate endorsement for controlled airspace, so any expert opinions here???

Yes he can fly in class B, C, and D airspace without additional endorsements. Being a private pilot he has already had the required training as part of his certification.

There is no regulatory requirement that a private pilot must have previously operated in such airspace. The requirement for extra training for airspace and an endorsement only apply to holders of student, recreational, or sport pilot certificates.

As a Commercial Pilot, I am certainly perfectly legal flying my LSA into one of the Big Twelve. (That does not necessarily mean I would want to!)

More properly, that prohibit Sport Pilots from landing at them. And I thought it was a dozen airports in Class B, but I'm not going to quibble over that.
