Sport Pilot Initial Need?

Post by Utah-Jay »

I am about to solo after having passed my Sport Pilot written this week. I am uncertain as to the requirements for my initial FAA medical if any. Am I good to go with just my DL or do I need to get an FAA medical the first time?

Thanks

No need for any medical - just your driver license.

Thanks, then I can cancel my Dr. appt.

I was going back and forth between PPL and Sport, but we will be flying a Rans S-20 so no need for a PPL

The only circumstance when you'd need to get an FAA medical certificate to fly exercising the privileges of a sport pilot is if you previously applied for an FAA medical certificate and had your most recent FAA medical certificate or application denied, revoked, withdrawn, or suspended by the FAA. In those cases you're not allowed to operate using a valid state driver’s license until you have cleared the denial from the FAA airman record by having a valid third-class medical certificate issued. That third-class medical can be a special issuance and need not be renewed; you can just let it lapse and then use your valid state issued driver's license in lieu of an FAA medical certificate.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Just curious...

Did you discuss this with your instructor at any point?

I was in the middle of changing instructors when I posted this question. I was going from nose wheel to taildragger and was not flying for about 2 weeks when while I was also studying for my written which I passed. The initial CFI was really only knowledgeable about PPL
