LOA from DOA SLSA

Talk about airplanes! At last count, there are 39 (and growing) FAA certificated S-LSA (special light sport aircraft). These are factory-built ready to fly airplanes. If you can't afford a factory-built LSA, consider buying an E-LSA kit (experimental LSA - up to 99% complete).

LOA from DOA SLSA

Post by Atrosa »

If i were to purchase a SLSA that was manufactured by a company that is no longer (DOA) how would i go about upgrading it to adsb if getting a LOA is not possible? Would i have to go the experimental route?

Thank in advance.

If the company is truly DOA and you there is nobody in authority from the company to issue an LOA/MRA, ELSA conversion is your only route to 2020 compliance.

From reading posts here and on other forums, those who have done the recertification from SLSA to experimental are happy they did it; I know I am.

The downsides are that it can no longer be used for commercial purposes, insurance premiums may be a little higher, and resale value might take a hit.

Has anyone actually posed this question to the FAA in OK or their local FSDO? I would bet they might have a solution before one has to got EAB.

For a SLSA with a manufacture who is no longer in business, and no one else has taken over the support of the airplane the only option is to go ELSA. I don't remember who I was talking with, but I think it was the FAA. They mentioned that there was an early model SLSA that this happened to, and the FAA forced the already registered aircraft to convert to ELSA.
