Any more A65 tips, tricks, and experiences greatly appreciated!

This is my first experience with a vintage engine (apart from my 79 VW camper!). I’m used to the bulletproof 912. I’m not particularly mechanically minded or experienced, but I would like to learn enough about the care and feeding of the A65 to get me from Georgia to Arizona.

What tools should I bring? Any routine checks I should do along the way? Any warning signs to look out for?

Thanks again in anticipation!

The engine instrumentation is a bit sparse!

If possible, I would fly around locally an hour or two the day before you depart for Arizona. If you don't experience any issues, head out and have a good time.

That's the plan. I'll stay for a day and fly for a few hours, sort out the handheld radio, headset, Sentry, iPad, etc before heading west.

May I suggest a Plan B? If you don't like what you experience on that day, it would be good to have already lined up a U-haul and figured out how to remove the wings.

Or, don't buy the airplane.

That would be a good Plan C (or maybe vice-versa).

I’m always amazed by this. The airplane appears to have been flying for years with no range marks on any instruments.

Who has been doing the condition inspections or what DAR inspected it in the first place.

Of Course the one in the EAA museum has the same lack of markings
https://www.eaa.org/eaa-museum/museum-c ... d---n9017c

The Aeronca 7AC Champ has similar Scott engine gauges. I’d say try to copy the markings from those but I did not see much info on the 7AC Type Certificate Data sheet.

Here’s a link to the A-65 overhaul manual. The chart a few pages in labeled Page 1 has limitations.
https://www.cocotier.org/engines/contin ... 75_IPC.pdf

Here is good reading http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/fenton.html

The A-65 is very bulletproof but if provoked it can cause problems. Most of the troubles I have seen are due to neglect and corrosion or assembly errors. Once running well and not leaking all over it will usually continue for a long time.

Aircraft spruce has range marking tape https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... edecal.php
Your supposed to have a slippage mark painted between the glass and instrument case to show if the glass moves when using a tape or mark directly on the glass.

the Scott gauges won’t show oil temp for quite a while. Look for a set of A-65 underwear. https://www.wagaero.com/oil-tank-cover-kit-4-5-qt.html

Don’t worry about lack of CHT or EGT. It won’t matter much with the baffle and carb setup you have.

Is this the same airplane?
http://corbenbabyace.weebly.com/ace-projects.html

Best I can find is redline airspeed is 110 MPH

UK flight test report. The Corben that used to be here has stiff ailerons also but flew ok. http://www.lightaircraftassociation.co. ... Corben.pdf

Put the registration number in the FAA website and see what comes up. Searching Corben no results N number ending in Hotel.

https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquir ... quiry.aspx

It should have a pink copy of the operating limitations. This will be in place of a normal certified airplane airworthiness certificate.

Page 14 is the absolute best article I have ever read on the propeller hub maintenance for the small continentals.

If you have a flange crank without the removable prop flange hub then disregard.

try the n number search. See if anything comes up. I think I figured out the N number from photos but I did not get any results.
