TL Ultralight Stingsport

Talk about airplanes! At last count, there are 39 (and growing) FAA certificated S-LSA (special light sport aircraft). These are factory-built ready to fly airplanes. If you can't afford a factory-built LSA, consider buying an E-LSA kit (experimental LSA - up to 99% complete).

TL Ultralight Stingsport

Hello all,
I plan on looking at a 2006 Stingsport E-LSA in the near future.
It has less than 600 hrs engine and airframe.
Here is a list of concerns;
Nose gear strut replacement; has it been completed?
Main gear leg surface cracks and delamination; how long do the OEM ones last?
The use of mogas vs 100ll in regard to ethanol and fuel tank damage. I have yet to inquire about that.
I have been led to believe that the inspections requiring the wing and horizontal removal have not been complied with, as often as required.

If you Sting owners have opinions, I'd love to hear them.
I did meet and chat with a Sting owner at the 2023 AOPA Buckeye Az Fly In but didn't get his name or tail number.

I have a 2009 Sting that I will be listing soon for a customer. I just completed an extensive condition inspection. The airplane only has 130 hours since new, and it shows. It is very well equipped.

I don’t get it .. people pay 100k+ to buy a plane that they then fly maybe a dozen hours per year ?

Tim, watch out for any Rotax 912 series engine manufactured prior to early 2006 - they have a known problem with crankcase fretting, which was corrected by a design change.

Early 912 crankcases (prior to s/n 06.0010) are prone to fretting regardless of flight hours. Fretting can cause oil leakage along the seam between the crankcase halves. When this happens, it is natural to want to increase the torque on the thru-bolts, but this result in reduced main bearing clearance and increased main bearing wear. At the extreme, you will note increased force required when pulling the prop thru to burp the engine. If you have one of these early design crankcases, the engine will likely not reach TBO.

I am now the owner of a 2005 Sting Sport.
Had an uneventful flight home (LRU - E95 - GEU) at 6500'.
Fresh annual, including 5-year rubber replacement (carbs included) didn't reveal anything of concern except for prop pitch,
and I'll look into that as soon as practicable.

I do need a towbar and an aft tiedown fuselage strap solution as there is no aft tiedown "eyelet".
Also have an issue with lack of friction on the trim lever. It likes to go nose down and had to be held almost constantly for hands off or while the autopilot was on.
Any and all help will be much appreciated.

Warmi, Thanks! I'm also expecting "pure joy" for the next 500 hrs.
CTflier is a great site and I look at it weekly. Wish there was something like that for the TL-Ultralight owners.

This thread should have photos. I may add them later.
First oil change after annual (20hrs) revealed more lead than preferred in oil tank. I'll use more Decalin, 1 oz per 10 gallons as opposed to .5 oz.
The GRS/BRS window and grommet were "secured" with many small strips of packing tape and it appeared that the grommet was damaged. I removed it and found the grommet intact but a little dry.
Cleaned window and grommet, silicone sprayed grommet and reinstalled. Should I trust the 18-year-old grommet to keep the window secure? I shall.
I did get the trim lever friction issue resolved by tightening the mounting bolt. I still feel like there should be more aft trim. I'll look into that at the next condition inspection as I have to remove the horizontal.

I did my first long solo cross country; Day 1 was GEU - P33 - LRU - PEC - E41. Too many unplanned bathroom breaks.
Lost 2 hours of daylight going east so I spent the night in Big Lake, Tx. Day 2 was E41 - BMQ.
Back home in one day; BMQ - PEC - LRU - GEU. I logged close to 17 hours.

Would be nice if there was a TL Ultralight forum like the Flight Design owners have.

My GRS window cracked a few years back in a cold ( really cold ) weather - seems to be a bit of design problem as I have seen same style crack on a factory plane at Oshkosh.

StingSport tires & OAT probe

TIRES: StingSport owners, what tires are you using?
I noticed drdehave (Sting Flight) was using the Kenda Loadstar.
My plane came with Deestone DS7251's (D901) on the mains and a 15-year-old Continental LB 3.5-8 46J on the nose.
I spooned on a new set of Deestone DS7251's and it was no easy task. Doable? Yes. Easy? No.
I looked over the Master Equipment list and the Continental LB 3.5-8 46J & Kenda Loadstar were not on it. Not that I care.
Is there a tire or two that's less of a pita to get on these rims? Do tell.

OAT PROBE: Do you have one? If so, which one and where is it mounted?
I'd like to install the Davtron C307PS. This is the only one that works with the uAvionix AV-30.
I contacted Trey and am waiting for a reply.

I put on Loadstars the last time. I don't think any one tire would be any easier than another to get onto the wheel. Also, replaced the wheel bearings while I was at it.

No OAT probe.

Stingsport Fuel Flow Transducer

Hello all,
I am wanting to install the FT-60 Red Cube fuel transducer.
I'd appreciate a pic or two of how the other stings have them installed.
Location, fuel hose routing etc.
If you can't post here feel free to pm me for my email.

I did get the OAT probe installed and it is working as expected.
Haven't changed prop pitched, yet but it's on the spring to-do list.

I ordered the probe from Aero Performance. I had two choices for the OAT probe.
One that works with the GRT EIS or one that works with the AV-30.
I went with the AV-30 OAT probe (Davtron C307PS) which gives me OAT, density altitude and TAS.
The GRT EIS probe only gives OAT.
