Specify Aircraft Type

Jason spent 24 years as an air traffic controller at Los Angeles Center, and recently moved east to work in DC in the Airspace office as an air traffic subject matter expert. He is a Sport Pilot, owns a Rans S12XL E-LSA, and got his >87 knot endorsement so he can rent a C162. He's here to answer your questions about ATC procedures and rules, in a strictly unofficial capacity.

This has happened to me on numerous occasions. Each time I've responded with "ICAO designator Juliet Alpha Bravo 4". I guess that gave them what they needed, as in each instance I was not questioned any further.

I was watching a video of a Mooney that had their engine explode after takeoff at Dulles (IAD).

I think I see now why ATC asks for the aircraft type - it shows up on their radar screen along with your tail number.
BTW, at 2:10 on the video that is me in 693JP on my way through the SFRA going from Leesburg (JYO) to Bay Bridge (W29)
