Does he need 2 hours of dual within 2 months to take that flight test?

I believe that's just for an initial rating, but I can check with my FSDO supervising inspector next week.

Of course, he could get that with one of your guys if need be. It would take about ..... 2 hours.

Not wanting to cause any trouble, but what endorsement would you use to allow someone to act as PIC in an airplane that is contrary to a restriction on their pilot certificate? Maybe 61.63 even though it doesn't really apply.

There is none. That's why he needs to take a flight test to get the restriction removed from his Sport Pilot Certificate.

I understand that. I was wondering what regulatory method was used to justify the 10 hours of current solo time in the Tecnam. It is nothing against him, but it should be an issue for the instructor who authorized it.

To clarify, there is no requirement for solo rudder-pedal time to remove the restriction. Only dual instruction (not even any specified number of hours), and a signoff from the Recommending Instructor. I think I had about five hours of self-launch dual before I got my motorglider signoff.

I understand that. I hope to do my self-launch endorsement this Summer. There are several endorsements throughout the regulations that require only instruction, with no solo provisions before the endorsement can be given. I suspect that technically this is the same. That being said unless the OP decided on his own to fly the Tecnam solo, that some instructor must have provided an endorsement. I am curious what endorsement was used just to use it as an example when explaining what can and can not be done to another instructor.

So when OP says they have the Ercoupe only restriction on their license does that mean it's listed on their certificate under "limitations" with the others like the holder does not meet ICAO requirements limitation? Never heard of a certificate being limited to just one aircraft type.

It is indeed listed as a limitation, but does not specifically mention Ercoupe. Rather, it states "restrictrd to two axis control aircraft only" (or similar language)

Again, not a “type”, but similarly if you take your multiengine checkride in a Skymaster, your multiengine license is limited to “centerline thrust only”.

This is a pretty good example of terribly complicated rules and regulations coming out of FAA dens...

How is that different than a manual vs automatic transmission in a car ?

We don’t need no damn endorsement and other official nonsense to drive a stick shift ... and we don’t have hordes of panicky first time stick drivers wrecking havoc on our roads , do we ?
We rely on people’s common sense - we expect them learn to drive a stick before they get on the road with it and that’s that.

FAA should stick to managing and setting rules for commercial operations where it matters ... and let eidolon and others like him manage their own GA experience without having a “designated person” watching their every move- I think,we gonna be just fine.

I think the reasoning is sound.
And why stop there?
Stick vs yoke.
Dual sticks vs center stick.
Mixture vs no mixture.
Carb heat vs no carb heat.
Flaps vs. flaperons.
Electric trim vs trim wheel.
Stabilator vs elevator.
Etc...
Think of the opportunity for hours and hours of paid training and multiple examiner checkrides!
Maybe they could even start a new federal bureaucracy that could hire too few people and spend 3-4 years making decisions.

GREAT idea! I should make this idea a part of my ongoing campaign to get myself a $25 million dollar Federal grant to do a study on how to stop the Feds from wasting our tax dollars on stupid studies?

I've sent my request to the Federal Department of Redundancy Department. Just anxiously waiting for a reply.
